  7.     Even when it comes to sensitivity, you can have too much
  8. of a good thing. The National Lesbian Conference last month in
  9. Atlanta was less than a ringing success, in part because
  10. conventioneers were distracted by the many "agreements" they
  11. were supposed to keep in mind. In deference to those suffering
  12. from "environmental illnesses," the NLC prohibited any perfume
  13. or clothing washed in scented soaps. The ban was enforced by a
  14. sentry wearing a surgical mask. Another guideline called for
  15. "parity" at all conference events. Thus half of all committee
  16. members had to be "lesbians of color," 20% had to be lesbians
  17. with disabilities and at least 5% of the members "old lesbians"
  18. (definition: "over 50 with a history of ageism activism"). In
  19. some areas, however, organizers abandoned any effort to find
  20. common ground. Because vegetarians and carnivores alike were
  21. attending the conference, no food at all was available for sale.
